Spindrift: Some Thoughts on Gaming

I’ve played my fair share of video games over the last few years and wanted to talk about something that has been on a lot of gamer’s minds recently: Pay to Win games or any game that has some sort of Loot system with Camo’s guns, and the like.

If you’re a gamer you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Games like Call of Duty, or any kind of competitive multiplayer games have been doing this recently. They’ll make some kind of system in their games where you can either earn in game currency or purchase it with real money to buy things customizable things and stronger weapons. Some games do it better than others and some simply don’t do it at all. I’ve found though that this may not be the most efficient way of doing things.

Let’s take the game Overwatch that’s coming out next week. This game also has a “loot system”. Every time you level up you get a loot box that has some kind of skin or other customizable gear for your character. You know what Overwatch doesn’t have? Weapons or game breaking things that can ruin an online experience. The game isn’t even 60 dollars! What Overwatch has done is create a game with loads of lore for the major fans, animated shorts to further develop characters, and create an amazing game. To make things better, they’re also giving everyone free characters and maps post-launch. Basically you can pay the very minimum and be as good as someone who pumps hundreds of dollars into the game. Yeah your character may not look as cool but you won’t see any changes gameplay wise.

All I’m trying to say is that if game developers don’t treat their fans like shit they might actually see an increase in income. I haven’t seen as much hype surrounding a game as Overwatch in a long time. Let’s continue to support games like Overwatch and ignore games that take advantage of their fans.

I also wanted to mention the start of my YouTube channel. We’ve got one video up right now and will hopefully be posting weekly. Here’s the link. It would mean a lot if you would check it out. And by the way, it’s supposed to be kind of cheesy. It’s not to be taken seriously.

Thanks for reading.
