Spindrift: What I Took Away from San Diego Comic Con

Every year at San Diego trailers are unveiled for upcoming movies. This year, I enjoyed sitting at home waiting for the bootlegged versions of trailers to roll in. For superhero fans this was a great Comic Con (especially DC fans). We got an HD trailer for Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad and if you look hard enough you can find a low quality recording of the Deadpool trailer. Both DC trailers were fantastic and I’ve watched them both more times than I can count. I’ll start with my opinions on Batman V Superman.

Ever since the announcement of this movie I’ve been anxious to see the first trailers. We had a small trailer a few months back but this one was much more fulfilling, to most people. We finally get to see Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman in action and we even get hints at Robin’s death. As of now, I’m assuming that Robin’s death sent Batman into retirement which explains why he wasn’t there to fight Zod in Man of Steel. Speaking of Zod there’s a scene in the trailer where you see Zod’s dead body which I think could show that Batman’s new suit was created out of Zod’s armor. That would explain how he can face off against Superman. Maybe he’s even working with Lex Luthor to take out the Man of Steel. We also see Alfred appearing as a voice of reason telling Batman that Superman is not their enemy. At some point obviously Batman and Superman have to team up to start the Justice league and Alfred may be a factor in changing Bruce Wayne’s mind. The one thing that I didn’t get from this trailer that I would have hoped for is Aquaman, although his addition could have made the trailer feel too crowded. If anything, this trailer just got me more excited for 2016.

Now for Suicide Squad. I don’t even know where to start with this one, because I loved it so much. The concept of Suicide Squad is such a good idea to begin with. This will be the first “superhero” movie that is based on villains. Of course, Batman will be in it, but will probably play a small role. The whole Squad looks unique, although we mainly saw Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and the Enchantress in this trailer. Margot Robbie being cast as Harley Quinn is some of the best casting I’ve seen in a comic book movie, in years. I’m also looking forward to seeing Will Smith’s portrayal as Deadshot. With Batman being in this movie, you can really see the DC Cinematic Universe come together.

Of course you can’t talk about the Suicide Squad trailer without talking about the Joker.

Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker looks amazing so far. Unlike many others, I actually like his and Harley’s tattoos. Just looking into his eyes when he says his intimidating line you can’t help but feel freaked out. The fact that Jared Leto is s method actor is very promising for the Joker. You can hardly even recognize him. Some people speculated that Joker was torturing Robin at the end of the trailer, but if you pay attention earlier in the trailer you can see that he’s torturing Harley Quinn. At this point she probably wasn’t the crazy person you saw in the trailer. I can’t wait to see how the Joker interacts with Batman and the Squad.

If you haven’t seen either of these trailers go check them out.

Thanks for reading.
